A narrow covered lane at night, paper lanterns receding into the dark above small bar fronts

The lamps
are on.

Skewers over charcoal, cold highballs, and a counter that seats the people who booked.

An izakaya in the yokocho tradition. Small plates, a yakitori counter over charcoal, sake and highballs, and one seated omakase counter at the end of it.

The alley

Walk it end
to end.

Something is cooking at every door. Nothing here needs a booking, a jacket, or a plan. You put your head in, you find a stool, you start with two things and see how the night goes.

TODO F15 Whether the venue is physically an alley or arcade is not confirmed yet, so this band describes light and fire rather than the shape of the room. Answer F15 and this copy gets specific.

  • A lit paper lantern hanging under a wooden eave outside a bar at night
01 One lamp is the whole sign. If it is lit, they are open.
  • A lit cloth noren curtain hanging across a doorway at night
02 The cloth across the door means the fire is going.
  • A person walking away down a narrow lane lit by shop lights
03 Light dies about a metre from the lamp. Then the next one starts.
  • People seated at a table inside a small warm-lit restaurant, seen from the street
04 Everybody is at somebody's elbow. That is the format, not a fault.
  • Lanterns strung above a narrow lane with a figure walking under them
05 Order two, drink one, order two more. Nobody is counting.
  • Two people sitting with drinks at a small bar table in a narrow lane, under a lit lantern
06 You sit down. That was the whole plan.

Charcoal, salt, smoke, skewers, sake, cold highballs, ice, lamplight, the counter, the alley.

Everything here
meets the fire first.

Charcoal, salt, and about ninety seconds of somebody's full attention. You will smell it from the door, which is the only advertising this place has ever needed.

The counter

The seat that
faces the fire.

At the counter you do not order. You sit down and it starts.

That is the one thing here worth planning your night around, and the one thing you cannot walk in for. It runs at a fixed number of seats, a fixed number of sittings, and it finishes when it finishes.
